The journey of LIFTA started when our founder, Mr. Prasad Dhume noticed his mother having difficulty while getting up from comfortable sofas at home. He soon noticed that many people had a similar problem.
With his decade-long experience in designing and manufacturing prosthetic legs in India, Prasad already had a good grasp on the bio-mechanical concepts pertaining to knee-joint movements. He designed an innovative assist mechanism to overcome this problem. He observed that currently none of the chairs had any such mechanism or means to fit it in. So, he ventured to design and build a complete product that helped people sit and stand comfortably, safely, and independently. The proposal to test his design and concept for sit-stand assist mechanism was accepted by the Government of India. Thereafter, LIFTA received the prestigious Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) by BIRAC – Department of Science and Technology, India.

From Idea to Innovation – Our Story
The BIRAC journey involved extensive research in understanding user requirements and the biomechanics of sit-stand. A data collection set-up was designed to research the bio-mechanics. User data was collected from middle-aged individuals and senior citizens. The data was analysed and used to build the prototype, which again went through rounds of user-testing and feedback collection.
The design was reviewed by an advisory panel comprising of an Ortho Surgeon, a Physiotherapist, Professor in BioMechanics from IIT – Chennai and India Director – Product Development -Ford. The design went through iterations and refinement to engineer an ergonomic design of a safe and comfortable chair LIFTA!
We now strive to bring the comfort of LIFTA – our elegant and ergonomic sit-stand assist chair to every home!
